Ricardo Eliecer Neftalí Reyes Basoalto, also known as Pablo Neruda, was born in Chile on July 12, 1904. He chose the pseudonym Pablo Neruda before publishing his first book in 1923 to avoid conflict with his family, who did not agree with his profession.
Between 1927 and 1935 the Government put Neruda in charge of a number of honorary consulship's, which took him to Burma, Ceylon, Java, Singapore, Buenos Aires, Barcelona, and Madrid. Throughout this time he published Residencia en la tierra, which marked Neruda's literary breakthrough.
After being elected to the Senate and joining the communist party in 1943, the Chilean government moved to the right and declared communism illegal. Neruda was expelled from the Senate and continued to write and publish while in hiding.
In 1952, the government became more lenient on leftist writers and Neruda returned to Chile, where he continued his career integrating private and public concerns and became known as the peoples poet. Throughout his lifetime Neruda received numerous awards such as the International Peace Prize in 1950, the Lenin Peace Prize and the Stalin Peace Price in 1953, and the Noble Prize for Literature in 1971.
On September 23,1973 Neruda, one of the greatest Latin American poets, died of Leukemia in Santiago, Chile.
